Year 11 student Corban Baker may be one of the lucky few blessed with natural sporting ability, but his positive attitude and participation has also helped him win the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin Award.

The award recognises secondary schools students who demonstrate values consistent with the Olympic movement through sporting participation. The Victorian Olympic Council presents the awards.

Corban plays basketball, football and soccer for the College’s Pakenham Campus. Outside school, he plays right back position in soccer for the South Melbourne Football Club Under 20s reserves, a team which recently won the National Premier League title.

It was Corban’s fifth championship in a row with the club, making him the first NPL player to achieve this. He captained the Under 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s sides to victory from 2015-2018 and was one of the youngest players selected in the Under 20s side this year, where he had an outstanding season.

Year 6 students were privileged to meet Holocaust survivor Joseph De Haan, aged 97, during an excursion this week to the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick.

Born in Amsterdam, this amazing man was taken in by family friends and brave Christians from the Dutch underground resistance movement, after the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940. He was eventually liberated, but his brother died in a concentration camp and his father and stepmother were murdered in Auschwitz.

What a stellar performance at Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time competition last week by our Pakenham Campus Junior School teams!

All three teams made it to the finals, with two teams winning the grand final and now progressing to the next level of competition. Apparently all team members showed great respect to their teammates and opponents throughout the day.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon stopped by Beaconhills College Berwick Campus this afternoon as part of her Walk for Disability.

The 14-22 September walk is to raise much-needed funds and awareness for people in Casey who live with a disability, as well as their carers. All proceeds will be donated to Project 28, an initiative by the Wolfdene Foundation that aims to create 28 supported accommodation units by the year 2028.

Headmaster Tony Sheumack, College staff and students greeted Cr Stapledon and her team and students presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Reports that tell the whole story

The messages that schools convey about their educational philosophy can sometimes appear contradictory.

On one hand, schools will talk about a holistic education – developing the ‘whole child’ – yet hold up their students’ academic successes as the sole measure of success.

At Beaconhills, our aim to develop student reports which more broadly match the stated goals of our College. That means not just academic achievement, although that of course is to be celebrated, but also the qualities embedded in our six pillars of Learning That Matters.

Along with their usual reports, next term parents of Years 5-10 students will receive Beacon Explorers reports, which give teacher observations on the local or global experiences students have taken part in during the year. Whether it’s travelling through East Timor or Vietnam, hiking along the Victorian coastline, the art and Indigenous culture experience in the NT’s Jabiru, or canoeing and bike-riding in Jindabyne, parents can expect to see feedback on their child’s development of attributes such as leadership skills, resilience, empathy or teamwork.

I believe these Beacon Explorers reports, which we will continue to develop, will add a meaningful new dimension to our reporting process. They may also give students valuable information to use as part of future job and tertiary applications.

I look forward to seeing you all in term 4.

Year 1 students at our Berwick and Pakenham campuses are taking part in a cultural exchange with schools in East Timor and Thailand.

Students have been creating a book about our culture and busily painting Australian animals onto calico bags, which will be sent overseas. The reusable bags are also a friendly message about caring for the environment.

Little Beacons find their happy place

Wurundjeri elder Murrundindi was a special visitor to Little Beacons recently to help our five-year-olds name their Early Explorers space near the centre.

He named the space ‘Yukatoon’ (meaning happy) and talked about how the hill in that space looked like Bunjil. He said whenever Bunjil (a creator deity, often depicted as an eagle) is around, people are happy.

Murrundindi (centre) is pictured with Little Beacons children, College staff and (l-r) Senior Reconciliation Captain Imogen Atkins and Year 7 Wurundjeri student Isabella Cameron-Dukes.

The chance to experience Japanese family and school life was something that 16 senior students from Beaconhills are unlikely to ever forget.

The group just returned from an exchange to Ibaraki Christian High School. As well as improving their Japanese language skills, the students took part in classes, learning about traditional hospitality, paper cutting, flower arrangement and cooking.

There were also visits to Taki Falls and the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, a ride on the bullet train to Miyajima, a visit to Hiroshima and the famous Peace Park and Peace Memorial Museum and exploration of Kyoto and Tokyo.

Student Charlotte Rue described the exchange as one of the most incredible trips of her life.

Congratulations are in order for a number of our students, who were recently recognised for their service to our community with Brad Battin’s Gembrook Community Awards.

Well done to Aaron Sharpe, Zoe Ellis, Chloe Ward, Alysha Hall, Charli Guthrie, Michael Lorne, Phoebe Hird, Shannon Carrigg and Milie Paterson.

“We are lucky to have so many wonderful members in the Gembrook Electorate who selflessly go the extra mile to build a stronger community,” Mr Battin said.

“It was inspiring for all on the night to hear the amazing work each awardee contributes for their community, expecting nothing in return and celebrating their hard work.”

Making a monster impact on the war on waste

Tomorrow is World Nude Food Day! So what better timing to share a passion project of Nathan Russo, Beaconhills alumni (Class of ’99) and current classroom teacher.

Meet the Garbage Guts monsters – don’t worry they’re super friendly! These monsters have very particular diets that coincidently align with the different bins around our school (with an extra character to eat soft plastics from REDcycle bins that are found in local supermarkets).

Recycling is one of the simplest ways to minimise negative impacts on the environment, but the effectiveness of recycling programs rely on waste being sorted correctly. That’s why Nathan created Garbage Guts Education! The program aims to teach children in schools how to correctly sort rubbish into the right bins in a way that is fun and educational, and will have a lasting impact for local households and communities.

To celebrate World Nude Food Day today, we can reveal the winners of our Beaconhills College Junior School Record Book cover competition!

The following two students created a design around the theme of Nude Food. Congratulations to Berwick Campus student Sean Zheng (Prep AJ) for his artwork ‘We are living on one world’ and Kristina Nastoulis (Year 1) from the Pakenham Campus.

In 2020, our Junior Schools will be implementing ‘Nude Food’ initiatives to help cut our waste to landfill.

Lauren is in her element

Former Beaconhills student and Chemistry PhD candidate Lauren Blakeley (Class of 2012) dropped in to the College recently with a special gift for our science labs.

In case you didn’t know, 2019 is the Year of the Periodic Table and Lauren came armed with a complete set of elements to present to the school.

She has helped Professor Stuart Battern from Monash University to assemble 600 sets to distribute to high schools across the nation. Each set has an authentic sample of each known element (within safety boundaries).

Lauren also took time out to give an interesting presentation on her work to senior students and offer some wise words of advice to those thinking of a career in chemistry.

Lauren pictured with teacher Wendy Prendergast, who was her senior Chemistry teacher during her time at Beaconhills.

An exciting visitor dropped by Beaconhills College yesterday – the real Melbourne Cup!

The Cup, accompanied by Victorian Racing Club officials, was visiting our region as part of the 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Members of our Equestrian Club and students gathered on the oval to get a close-up view of the iconic golden Cup as it made its way around the school.
